One leaves the Piazzetta opposite the church to approach the Val di Prato and, breathing in the fragrance of nearby woods (chestnut, birch and nut) can spot lizards scurrying across the path to seek shelter within the dense foliage. After approximately 1 hour one reaches Pradée (1000m), the widest fallow land, protected by the sacred beech forest. A little further on the path divides; to the right it leads to Sonogno in the Verzasca Valley via the Passo Redorta, and to the left it leads higher up to Schièd, La Froda and Corgell. The footpath now leads along the most interesting part of the climb to the mountain hut: the narrow and exciting gorge where the path only exists thanks to the little ground available on the left bank. Just above the wild and foaming river, steps supported by dry walls have been built. The charm of this passage lies firstly in the descent to the gorge, where it is almost possible to touch the water, and then in the climb across the slope on stone steps (la Scalada Longa). Once this point has been overcome, the valley widens once again and one can continue over gently rolling meadows where flowers and rhododendron bushes alternate beautifully. The Soveltra mountain hut can be reached in a few minutes, from which there is a spectacular view over numerous peaks. Imposingly situated in the centre below is Campo Tencia (the only mountain of 3000m within Ticino) – where the various meadows of Alpe Fontana, Campala, Campo Tencia and Soveltra can be found. After a restorative break inside the Soveltra hut, one approaches Prato Sornico by bypassing the gorge and continuing instead in direction of the Cascina Nova of the Alpe Campala (approachable in 20 mins.). Prato Sornico lies on a naturally occurring terrace on the opposite side within a beautiful peat bog region.
