Everybody who finds time to stay in the Vallemaggia can note the rich variety which has come into existence the last tausend years with the help of nature and man. 2400 years ago the “Liguri” reached the “Vallis Madiae” and settled down in the villages at the beginning of the valley where you still find archealogical finds. Proud of it’s own traditon and rights, the Vallemaggia kept it’s autonomy until 1513 as the splitting in cantons in Switzerland started. The “Landvogti” didn’t bring particular progress for the peoples lifes in the Valley but in the year 1798 you could find the Valley in a situation of great backwardness. This was also the reason why between 1860 and 1930 an hughe emigration flow started, which took away many young and strong working forces. As the emigration flow sunk the population started to leave the farmvillages and go to town. The number of inhabitants’ sunk from 10’0000 in the year 1700 down to 4500 in the year 1950. During the following decade the number of inhabitants’ grew again and the economy recovered.
