Bavona Valley

Small villages

Mondada, Fontana, Alnedo, Sabbione, Ritorto, Foroglio, Roseto, Fantanellata, Faedo, Bolla and Sonlerto belong politically to the commune of Cavergno, San Carlo to Bignasco.

Only partly inhabitant

The Bavona Valley isn`t populated the whole year long. In April the first inhabitants mainly from Cavergno and Bignasco go into the valley and stay until the end of october. During the summer months obviously the population is the highest. Uptil the 16th century the Bavona Valley was populated the whole year long.

No electricity
In the Bavona Valley, where there are 3 power stations and 3 dams, there`s no electricity an exception is San Carlo. The alternative solutions are solar panels, gas, small water turbines, candels, petrol and others.

A cable car to Robiei

From San Carlo a cable car takes you up to Robiei (1900m), which is situated at the bottom of the Basodino and where you can find the well-known glacier. In Robiei you can find a hotel built octagonal with 87 beds, an alp hut with 70 beds. Robiei is starting point for lovely walks in all directions. We just would like to mention the hiking route to the Cristallina pass (2568 m) and to its alp hut (2349 m), the one to the glacier Basodino and the walks to the mountain lakes (Nero, Bianco, Matörgn, Sfundau). Not forgetting the walk to the dams of Robiei, Zött and Cavagnoli. More striking but more difficult is the walk through the Boccetta di Vallemaggia (2635 m) to the Val Formazza (hut Maria Luisa, 2160 m, 70 beds).

A waterfall and a "Splüia"

It`s almost impossible not to mention the waterfall of Foroglio with its fall of 80 m and the Val Calnegia which you can reach from Foroglio (Crosa mountain lakes and connection to Bosco Gurin). To point out is also the “Splüia Bela” on the way to Calnegia. It’s a huge stone slab which forms a natural refuge for people and animals.

A hut and two lakes

Also very known is the region of the Piano delle Creste, where there is an alp hut with 44 beds and you can find the two mountain lakes Antabia. San Carlo - Piano delle Creste - Crosa mountain lakes - Foroglio (or vice versa) is a busy hiking route which is ideal for trained tourists who want to visit the higher mountain regions.
