The river Maggia looks like a long "snake" from the glacier of Basodino , altitude 3300 m, to the lake in Ascona, altitude 199m. During the years the river shaped the landscape and created lovely sand beaches and waterfalls. In the past the river was used as means of transport for wood, nowadays the tourist goes to the river to have fun and to relax. From Avegno to the Bavona Valley or the Lavizzara Valley you have several possibilities to spend gorgious days. One of the places to visit is certainly Avegno with its unique and wonderful sandy beach, then Aurigeno with its beach situated just under the bridge; for lovers of freedom the whole zone between Lodano and Someo is ideal as well as the first part of the Lavizzara Valley from Cavergno to Broglio or the Bavona Valley. Everybody who is searching for something special, we advise the waterwall in Maggia, Giumaglio or the "Puz Bèl" in Cavergno. Don`t forget that when it rains the calm river can be dangerous. It` s forbidden to swim in the gorge of Ponte Brolla.
